Building Wig Products for Hair Loss: Why Representation in Beauty Matters

Building Wig Products for Hair Loss: Why Representation in Beauty Matters

By Arlene Baldwin, Founder & CEO of LaceLayer

Hair loss affects millions of women, yet many wig products on the market today were not originally designed for people navigating hair loss. Instead, the beauty industry has often approached wig installs with a one-size-fits-all mindset.

For women experiencing alopecia, thinning hair, or scalp sensitivity, finding reliable wig products for hair loss can be frustrating. The needs of someone navigating hair loss can be very different from those simply wearing wigs for style or versatility.

At LaceLayer, our mission has always been to create wig install products designed with the real experiences of wig wearers in mind. As someone who has personally navigated hair loss, I’ve always believed that representation and lived experience matter when building solutions for this community.

Understanding Hair Loss and Wig Confidence

For many women, hair is deeply connected to identity, culture, and confidence. When hair loss enters the picture, it can affect far more than appearance. It can impact how someone shows up in the world, how they feel in social spaces, and how confidently they walk into a room.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly 50% of Black women experience some form of hair loss during their lifetime. One of the most common forms of scarring alopecia affecting Black women is central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), which studies estimate may affect up to 15% of Black women.

For many women navigating hair loss, wigs become an important tool for restoring confidence and control. Wigs allow women to reclaim how they present themselves while protecting their scalp and natural hair.

Yet despite how common hair loss is, the products designed to support wig wearers have not always reflected the needs of people experiencing hair loss.

Why Many Wig Products Are Not Designed for Hair Loss

One challenge within the beauty industry is that many wig adhesives and install products were originally designed with a general wig-wearing audience in mind, rather than specifically for people navigating hair loss or scalp sensitivity.

As a result, wig wearers experiencing alopecia or other forms of hair loss may encounter products that:

  • Irritate the scalp
  • Do not provide reliable hold
  • Are difficult to remove safely
  • Do not support longer-term installs

These challenges are even more important for people actively managing scalp health while wearing wigs.

This is one of the reasons lived experience matters when building beauty products.

When founders understand the everyday realities of the community they serve, they design differently.

Designing Wig Products for Hair Loss

When I started LaceLayer, my goal was simple: create wig install products designed with wig wearers in mind, especially those navigating hair loss.

One example is our LaceLayer Protective Skin Barrier for wig installs.

This product was designed to help protect the scalp while applying adhesives. The protective layer helps reduce irritation and creates a barrier between the skin and the adhesive, which is especially important for women with sensitive scalps or those experiencing hair loss.

The LaceLayer Protective Skin Barrier can also help increase the longevity of a wig install, allowing wearers to maintain their style longer while protecting their skin.

These details matter when creating products for a community that relies on wigs daily.

Supporting Wig Wearers Managing Hair Loss Treatments

Many women navigating hair loss are also treating their scalp with products like minoxidil or other hair regrowth treatments.

In these situations, removing and reinstalling a wig every single day is not always realistic.

Our LaceLayer Melting Spray for wig installs was designed with this reality in mind. It provides the hold many wig wearers need for their day, including light movement and everyday activities such as workouts, while still allowing the wig to be easily removed at night when needed.

This flexibility is important for women who are actively treating their scalp or simply want a secure install during the day without committing to a long-term hold.

Everyday Wig Care for Women Who Rely on Wigs

For many women navigating hair loss, wigs are not simply an occasional beauty choice. They are a part of everyday life.

Because of this, wigs cannot always be washed as frequently as someone might prefer.

That is why we created Citrus SZN Wig Perfume, designed to help keep wigs smelling fresh between washes. Wig perfume allows wig wearers to refresh their units without disrupting their style or install routine.

Small solutions like this reflect something we care deeply about at LaceLayer: supporting the real daily experiences of wig wearers.

More Than Wig Products

LaceLayer was built to help restore confidence for women who wear wigs, especially those navigating hair loss. But it has also become part of a broader conversation about representation in the beauty industry.

Too often, the products designed for women experiencing hair loss are created without input from the very communities most affected by it.

When brands lack lived experience, they often miss the details that matter most to the people they serve.

Building a brand in this space requires more than creating products. It requires listening, understanding, and designing solutions that reflect the everyday realities of the people who rely on them.

Changing the Conversation Around Hair Loss

Hair loss is more common than many people realize, yet conversations around it often remain quiet.

At LaceLayer, we believe confidence starts with community.

Creating space for open conversations around hair loss, wigs, and confidence helps women feel seen, supported, and empowered.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is create the products, communities, and conversations we once needed ourselves.

That mission continues to guide everything we build at LaceLayer.
